Acclaimed local filmmaker to speak at LUNAFEST

Katie Curran, 33, has worked as assistant producer, production assistant and camera for documentaries from PBS, NOVA and Power Paths. She interned for the Emmy award-winning Investigative Team at ABC News in Chicago and has worked as a freelance writer for print, National Public Radio and Lines Across the Sand, a documentary about author Edward Abbey and the environmentalist warriors of the Monkey Wrench Gang. Determined, but with a small budget, Curran backpacked across the world for the past five years to collect footage for her first film and directorial debut, "Greening the Revolution". This feature-length documentary examines the globalization of the food supply, focusing on the grassroots response of communities in India, Kenya, Zambia, Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, Haiti and the United States. The rough cut Curran's film has played at festivals in Milan, New York and Oaxaca, Mexico where Curran won 'Best Female Filmmaker'. The final cut of "Greening the Revolution" will premiere in 2011.

Katie will join Girls on the Run  of N. AZ Executive Director, Stephanie Ludwig in speaking before the evening films on Saturday, May 14th.

Exercise with weights helps build muscle and reduce body fat, lowering your level of circulating estrogen. What IS LUNAFEST?

LUNAFEST was established in 2000 by LUNA, the makers of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, to simultaneously promote women filmmakers, raise awareness for women’s issues, and support worthy women’s nonprofit organizations. LUNAFEST events take place between October and April of each year in hundreds of venues throughout the U.S. and Canada. Inspiring women through the art of film and community fundraising, LUNAFEST is a program that expands horizons and increases awareness.

This year’s festival features 10 short films that tell different stories of women, from Jessica Yu's myth-busting documentary about the mysteries of childbirth (The Kinda Sutra) to Courtney Cox's tale of a single woman in her early 40s who realizes she doesn't need a husband or boyfriend for happiness (The Monday Before Thanksgiving). The program includes art films, quirky animation and touching documentaries which are directed by filmmakers from Australia, New York, Bulgaria and Los Angeles, and share inspiring stories, from aging and motherhood, to body image and love.

Breast Cancer: It is NOT all Genetic

Has your life been touched by cancer?

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at 39. She was amazingly lucky that 'all' she lost was one breast. She had already given birth to and nursed two children. She is still a survivor 25 years later. My grandmother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer late in her life. Despite an amazingly valiant fight she died of the disease in about a year. My uncle survived colon cancer a good friend of mine has survived breast cancer in her 20's- 'all' she lost was both her breasts. My mother-in-law is surviving the deadliest form of brain cancer- she is an amazing inspiration to all of us.

I'm sure you have similar stories. We can talk about how cancer effects us all day- but what are we actually doing about it?

The Breast Cancer Fund's Pure Prevention campaign, is trying to educate all of us.

In fact, Did you Know:

* No more than 10% of breast cancers are genetic

* Science increasingly points to toxic chemicals and radiation as factors in the sharp rise of breast cancer incidence.

LUNAFEST is a national film festival that features short films by, for and about
women.

LUNAFEST was established in 2000 by LUNA®, makers of the whole
nutrition bar for women to simultaneously promote women filmmakers, raise
awareness for women’s issues and support worthy women’s nonprofit
organizations.

• All proceeds from LUNAFEST are donated to charity. 85% of profits are donated to
local nonprofit organizations, the remaining 15% goes to LUNA’s primary cause
partner, the Breast Cancer Fund, an organization dedicated to identifying and
advocating for the elimination of environmental causes of the disease.
